What is Guardian GSI?
Disability coverage without the medical hurdles
Guardian makes Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) disability insurance available to eligible residents and fellows at certain training institutions. Eligibility is based on your institution, your training status, and your application history — which is exactly what this check looks at.
- No medical exam
- Own-occupation coverage designed for physicians
- Offered by Guardian to residents and fellows at eligible training programs
Frequently asked questions
Why does my institution matter for GSI eligibility?
Guardian’s GSI disability insurance is only available at select residency and fellowship programs.
What if my training institution isn’t listed?
Some training institutions are eligible for discounted physician disability insurance even without GSI availability. If you don’t see your institution, continue to the next step to learn more.
What does it mean if my institution shows a GSI result?
A GSI result means an institution-specific Guardian GSI option may apply based on your training location. The correct next step can depend on timing, prior application history, and the applicable program process.
Can I check my eligibility after graduation?
Yes. Guardian GSI may remain available through 90 days after you complete residency or fellowship. Enter your exact completion date to check your timing. Other eligibility requirements still apply.

Good news
No medical exam and no health questions are part of GSI. A few additional questions will show whether you may qualify.
Step 2 of 4 — Timing
Graduation date
Are you a resident or a fellow?
Have you signed an attending contract?
Step 3 of 4 — Work status
Your work status
Have you been working at least 30 hours per week, performing your usual duties, for the past six months?
New PGY1? Answer Yes if you’ve met those work requirements since starting residency.
Are you disabled, on leave, receiving disability benefits, or awaiting a disability claim decision?
Step 4 of 4 — Application history
In the past five years, have you applied for individual disability insurance?
Count applications, not quotes.
Was the application withdrawn or left incomplete, or did it result in a decline, postponement, modification, exclusion, or extra rating (cost)?
Was this application with Guardian?
Was this application before or within the first nine months of your current program?
Use the application date, not the decision date.
You qualify for Guardian GSI.
